August 10 : Top 5 things to do today

By Kirsten Neil

What does Kevin Costner have to do with the Canada Games? Absolutely, positively, nothing. However, a few of his famous movies seem to fit perfectly with today’s top five places you need to be. So, Mr. Costner, take it away...

1. Waterworld

Waterworld was an expensive dud of a movie, but the watersports at the Games have been anything but. Swimming continues to destroy at the Pan Am Pool and Canoe/Kayak is ripping up the Red River at Manitoba Canoe and Kayak Centre. Get your tickets here.

2. Field of Dreams

We have two fields to send you to today and the voices you’ll hear will not be from ghosts of athletes past, but rather cheers from friends and families of athletic stars of Canada’s future. On the pitch at Ralph Cantafio, Men’s Soccer is in full Medal Rounds mode. Games are at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Get your tickets here.

And over at John Blumberg, the Qualification Rounds for Softball are still going strong. Team Manitoba takes on Team Alberta at 3:00 p.m. and then the two top teams, British Columbia and Ontario, will bat-tle it out for Softball leaderboard supremacy at 5:00 p.m. Get your tickets here.

3. Tin Cup

Fore-get watching the old dogs golf. This week it’s all about Canada’s up and comers. Golf begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Southwood Golf & Country Club. Photo: Matt Bedard.

4. Canadian Flyers

Sorry, America, it’s all about the Canadian Flyers up here. Today, Cycling keeps rolling on at Birds Hill Provincial Park with the Men’s Road Race. Race starts at 10:00 a.m.

5. The Big Chill

The best place to reunite with your friends and chill after an intense day of competition? The Festival, of course. Tonight, Nova Scotia is taking over the mainstage and they’re bringing Natalie MacMaster and The Trews with them.
