Corner Brook 1999

In 1999, Newfoundland and Labrador welcomed Canada to Corner Brook, the host city for the 17th iteration of the Canada Games. Over the course of 15 days, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador invited the nation to celebrate its 50th anniversary of Confederation with Canada. The Games focused on the rich history of the province, with the opening/closing ceremonies featuring performances and the 1999 Canada Games medal encompassing the province’s beauty and heritage.

The Games featured 15,000 participants, including 2,575 athletes and 629 managers and coaches. The Games were composed of 21 sports being played in 14 different venues and marked the first time Newfoundland and Labrador had hosted the Canada Winter Games.

The economic impact associated with the Games has helped to enhance communities across the province. An estimated 5,000 non-local and 10,000 local spectators witnessed the Games. Furthermore, the 1999 Canada Winter Games generated $29 million in expenditures.
