The unveiling was at the Manitoba Club where the medals were modelled by Canada Games alumni Natalie Spooner, Adam Van Koeverden, Cindy Klassen, Kaitlyn Lawes, Jennifer Botterill and Doreen Botterill.
Teck, Canada’s largest diversified resource company, is the exclusive medals supplier for the Canada Games. As a proudly Canadian company for over 100 years, Teck is honoured to help celebrate the achievements of athletes from coast to coast by providing the medals. Teck is also the exclusive medals supplier for the next two Canada Games.
“Teck has been a phenomenal national partner of ours since 2013, when they helped create the medals for the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke,” says Tom Quinn, Canada Games Council Chairman. “Now, for the 2017 Canada Summer Games, our 50th anniversary Games, Teck have truly outdone themselves in creating a special medal worthy of such a momentous sporting event. We know that each and every athlete who will reach the podium will sense a feeling of pride for years to come thanks to remarkable work done by Teck in creating these medals.”
Teck’s operations supplied metal that was used in the production of the medals.
“With our long history in Canada, we’re proud to partner with the Canada Games in recognizing the tremendous athletes competing in Winnipeg,” said Don Lindsay, President and CEO, Teck. “The more than 1,700 medals that will be handed out during the Games will celebrate the accomplishments of the athletes while inspiring them to continue their pursuit of excellence.”
Local artist Kenneth Lavalee designed the medals in collaboration with indigenous Elders. The design captures the spirit of the 2017 Canada Summer Games with a distinct Manitoba flavour.
“Winning a medal is the greatest achievement for any athlete,” said Jeff Hnatiuk, President and CEO of the 2017 Canada Summer Games Host Society. “We wanted to make that moment even more special for the athletes of the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg by giving them a beautiful and truly unique medal."
Kenneth’s design will be featured on one side of the official medal that will be awarded to athletes reaching the podium. A branded Canada Games graphic is displayed on the other side of the medal.
